Sharing God's heart through poetry, prose and prayer

Fearfully and wonderfully made

Even our molecules tell the story of salvation and contain a diagram of the cross to show us the way home to our Father.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14).

The physiotherapist frowned as he examined my elbow.

“Hmm..” he said enquiringly, “you have a bit of a strange bump there…”

He moved to my other elbow and felt in the same spot. “Oh, it’s the same on the other side,” he smiled, “it’s just you!”

“Was I glued together in the wrong order?” I jokingly asked.

“Maybe,” he laughed.

Perhaps you have wondered the same. We are not all created equal! Some of us have bits or bones that are not like others! No two bodies are the same, just as no two minds, hearts or souls are the same. Even identical twins have different personalities and slight variations in height and weight. We are all different because God made each of us unique. But sometimes if we compare ourselves to others, we can feel inadequate and unimportant.

God wants us to know that we are not at all insignificant. I recently read that if you took all your DNA, straightened it out and put it end to end, it would stretch to Jupiter and back ten times over! The point was made that in the light of this fact, we are neither small nor insignificant, but just very well folded! Our DNA is incredible and is what makes us unique. Better yet, God chose our DNA. He pre-planned and made each one of us with only one set of blueprints, completely unique and different to any other person, and he folded us well. His work is “very good” (Genesis 1:31)

Not only did God fold us well but he glued us together very well too (and in the right order!) There is a substance in our bodies called laminin. Laminin is a type of protein like glue that literally holds our membranes together! Without it our bodies would fall apart. It is literally the glue of the human body, holding our organs in place, our skin on, and every cell together. As pastor Louie Giglio revealed some years ago, if you look at a diagram of laminin, or see it under a microscope, it actually has the shape of a cross. It appears to be the perfect shape of the cross of Christ. Is this a coincidence? I think not! For our Creator God has written the story of salvation into the very core of our being since the beginning. The Bible says that all of creation points to him,

“Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

God’s power and plan of salvation can be seen in what he has made, including human beings! Even our molecules (cell adhesion molecules to be exact!) tell the story of salvation and contain a diagram of the cross to show us the way home to our Father. Speaking of Jesus, Colossians 1: 17 says that “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” It is he who literally holds you together!

What does all this mean? It means we are safe. It means that God is in control and has written salvation into the core of our being. God made you. He knows you. He glued your parts together (“You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb” Psalm 139 :13) You have been carefully and deliberately assembled by Almighty God.

You.

Made by God.

If you had a label or care tag, it would say, “Limited edition. Made by Almighty God”

This should fill you with confidence! If you are struggling with health, fear or emotional problems, know that the God of the universe who made you, and has your back. The fingers that formed stars, planets, land and sea, formed you. And if he formed you, he can mend you. He can take your broken parts and restore them and heal you. Nothing is impossible for God. He is outside the laws of science and medicine. He is outside of time itself.

I once prayed with a lady at a healing service with our pastor. She had a breast lump that had persisted and was deemed to be suspicious. The following day she was due to have a surgery to remove the lump. We laid hands on her and prayed for God to meet her at her deepest point of need with his healing love and prayed for wisdom for the doctors at the hospital. Twenty four hours later the phone lines of our small church community were lit up and buzzing! Our friend had gone to the hospital with the lump still very much there in the morning, but on examination, the doctor had not been able to find it! A second doctor was summoned who also could not find the lump! After more testing, the baffled doctors declared that the lump had mysteriously disappeared! Unsure of what to do, they abandoned the biopsy, declared a misdiagnosis and sent our friend home! She had been completely healed! She tells of how she walked across the public park outside of the hospital, searching for the lump, and how it had indeed miraculously vanished! Because God her Creator is above the laws of science and medicine!

God’s Kingdom is about restoration and re-creation. It’s about gluing things back together and making them like new again. Sometimes we pray for restoration, perhaps of a marriage, a health problem, or for a wandering child, and we do not see restoration. But maybe that is because God is going to re-create the situation instead. Sometimes he chooses to do something new or to give us something new with which to handle our situation. If your situation has not been restored, it may be that he is going to recreate it instead.

God is our Maker and our sustainer. When our lives, bodies or circumstances seem to be falling apart, we can trust the One who made it all to hold us together. All things, all people, all bodies, all circumstances hold together in Christ who is the answer.

God created you to be a wonderfully unique and special person. Everything about you from your knobbly knees to the colour of your eyes, to the way you think and feel, your personality type, your funny little quirks, your hopes and fears and your DNA have all been stamped with God’s approval and picked just for you. Nothing about you is random or accidental. You are not a victim of chance or random faulty DNA. You are not broken, unworthy, or “unfixable”. You are not a lost cause. You are God’s child, chosen in him before the creation of the world to exist for his glory! Wow!

All the parts of you point to God, from your innermost cells and molecules to your outward smile! He is the One who not only sustains you and holds you together but is at work through you to bless and encourage others as you make him known. You are a very much needed and loved person in his Kingdom. In Him you are made strong and safe.

Prayer: Thank you my Father for creating me and making me so unique. Thank you for inscribing the cross into the very core of my being, as a reminder that you hold all things together both within me and within the universe. In this knowledge, help me to trust you with all that concerns me, and to move forward confidently in life, to share your message of restoration and recreation with others. In Jesus Name, Amen.
